I Win

I was in the dark
But I couldn't see it.
I didn't know what light was.
How then could I miss it?

That was how you found me
Way back when-
A tiny, wounded, frightened thing
In desperate need of a friend.

You were like a ray of light
When you came into my life.
You were to me an angel
Though I didn't think to ask what kind.

You opened up a world to me
I still cannot describe
But that was just the outer coat,
The inside was much more vile.

Beneath the sweet exterior
Was a filling of abuse and lies,
Manipulation mixed with laughter
And copious creamy smiles.

People ask me why I stayed;
Think I'd surrendered my mind
To a beautiful angel
But not the benevolent kind.

So now you've come around again
Expecting I'd let you in.
Arrogance was always your Achilles heel
And this time around,
I.
Win.

After the Storm

Everybody talks about
How they want a love that's strong,
Then there was you
And I knew I'd found the one.
We were so good together
Whether we were making plans,
Laughing or talking about the weather.
Yours was a love I never wanted to end
But in life you never know
What's waiting round the next bend.
Our story's over;
You sleep in clover
Beneath the smiling sun.
In some way,
I think I had to pay
For having known so much perfection.
So while you feed the flowers,
I while away the hours
In self contempt.
As I gaze up at the moon,
I feel certain that soon
The pain will all be spent;
The light will fill the space
Where in solitude I've dwelt
And prove that thing to be true
Which I have always felt:
That in getting to know you
 I have been bountifully blessed.

Weathering

This morning I thought
I'd broken even;
That the dark cloud above me
Was finally leavin'.
This morning I woke
With the light of hope;
Turns out that I might have misspoke:
The patch of blue sky that appeared
Making me think I was in the clear,
Got swallowed up like so much wine
And the lightning's playing hopscotch on the skyline.
So I guess this storm isn't over just yet;
I'm not sure how much worse it'll get
But I'm getting tired of resisting
So I cry out just in case You're listening.
In the face of this fury, I hunker down
And I grit my teeth but how the wind howls!
