Pay the Piper

I tried my best,
Gave all I could
And then some.
I pushed the upper limit
And I jumped the gun.

Now the musicians
Have taken up their instruments;
The band's about to play.
The fat lady's in position;
The piper's calling for his pay.

I scan the room in a heartbeat
Looking for a dark corner,
An obscure place to hide
But there's nowhere to go
Though I search far and wide.

So now it comes down to it,
I stand erect, poised and alert
Yet fragile like a china doll,
Shuddering, I close my eyes
And wait for the hammerfall.
